Accutane is prescribed for a particularly severe form of acne. Severe nodular acne can be moderate or severe, usually results in some form of permanent scarring, and almost always fails to respond to any of the normal courses of treatment for acne. A Vitamin A retinoid, Accutane dosages can vary from 10 mg to 40 mg, are based mainly on the weight of the patient, and are carefully determined and monitored due to the potency of the medication. Accutane is thought to work by preventing the skin from producing oil. It is not a quick response treatment, a visible improvement in the quality of the skin may take several months.
Accutane treatment, depending on how bad the particular case of acne is, can last up to six months. If unsuccessful, a second course of treatment may be used. Accutane has shown great results with as many as 70% of patients using it seeing elimination of their acne symptoms following a single course of treatment. Accutane is very potent and can have side effects, but properly monitored by a physician it can be the right answer for your severe acne.
